Barcelona target Chelsea center-back amid continued contract standoff

Barcelona back in for Christensen

Spanish giants Barcelona have once again made a play for Chelsea center-back Andreas Christensen amid the contract standoff the Danish international is currently in at Stamford Bridge.

Christensen is out of contract in the summer with the current European holders, and Barcelona is one of two clubs that have continued to log interest in the Cobham academy graduate given he has yet to agree to fresh terms with Thomas Tuchel’s outfit, with the other club said to be Serie A giants AC Milan.

But according to Fabrizio Romano, the attempt is nothing but a last-gasp effort by Barça to land the Dane as both Chelsea and the Catalan-based side expect him to finally agree to a new deal at some point over the coming weeks if not days.

Christensen remains highly valued at Chelsea despite the uncertain nature of his contract status at the club, with the Danish international recently starting the Blues’ two most-recent fixtures against Watford and West Ham in the Premier League.

Rüdiger nearing Chelsea exit

Though Andreas Christensen looks set to extend his stay with Chelsea, Antonio Rüdiger could be making the opposite decision after the German international looks primed for a summer move to Real Madrid.

The Independent’s Tom Kershaw stated that Rüdiger’s brother – who is also his agent – already has terms in place with the Spanish giants, while a meeting with German juggernaut Bayern Munich was also said to have taken place during last week.

News regarding Rüdiger comes as somewhat of a hammer blow for Chelsea, who were hoping to secure both he and Christensen to fresh terms in the English capital after the duo has come on strong under Thomas Tuchel since the arrival of the German tactician.

With Thiago Silva also expected to depart the club on a free, this leaves Chelsea in a position where they will now need to invest heavily at the back in the summer with the club being left with only Malang Sarr, Trevoh Chalobah, as well as Christensen moving into next season.
