Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel critical of performance in 3-3 draw with Zenit

Tuchel critical after late goal damages European campaign

Chelsea is into the round of 16 of the Champions League this season though will have to settle for finishing second in Group H after Zenit St.

Petersburg salvaged a point in stoppage time in front of the home support in a 3-3 draw.

Midfielder Magomed Ozdoev, who came off the bench for Sergei Semak’s side in the 80th minute, struck in the third minute of added time and cancelled out Timo Werner’s second goal on the night which looked to go down as the match-winner.

Should Werner’s winner have stood, Chelsea would have ended level on points with Juventus (15) but with a better head-to-head record thanks to their 4-0 thrashing of the Serie A giants as well as and goal difference, and thus finished top.

But the overall performance did not sit well with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who was heavily – and justifiably – critical of the overall performance;

“If you are the coach of Chelsea and concede six goals in three matches and give away four leads, then I don’t want to talk about individual performances. No one can be happy, nobody.

Our behaviour changes when we have a lead and this is something we never did and should never do. We need a higher concentration level, it is the basics.” Note: quotes sourced from Goal’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella.

A worrying recent trend at the back for Chelsea

Already eluded to by Tuchel, Chelsea has been a shadow of themselves from across the vast majority of this season in recent outings, much to the frustration of the German tactician.

The Blues have now surrendered six goals in their last two fixtures in all competitions; something a Tuchel-led side has not done since 2019 when Paris Saint-Germain achieved identical poor status after poor performances against LOSC Lille and Nantes.

Blues supporters turned to social media after Chelsea went into the dressing room 2-1 down at half-time to rip into summer loan signing Saúl Ñíguez for another abysmal performance since his anticipated rental move from Atlético Madrid.

Now with their failure to secure top spot in their Champions League group, Chelse faces the prospect of a date with the likes of Real Madrid, red-hot Ajax Amsterdam, Bayern Munich, or one of LOSC Lille, Sevilla, or RB Salzburg. For Chelsea fans, avoiding the minefields that are Madrid and Bayern would be a massive bullet dodged.
