Michael Carrick set for first managerial role following Manchester United exit? Former midfielder one of ‘top candidates’ for vacant position

Michael Carrick departs Manchester United

Once Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked, Michael Carrick took the reins as Manchester United’s caretaker manager until Ralf Rangnick was named as interim boss.

Carrick did a superb job as Manchester United’s caretaker manager. The former midfielder earned the Red Devils a place in the Champions League knockout rounds, courtesy of a 2-0 win over Villarreal.

Then, despite being heavy underdogs for the tie, Carrick helped United to secure a 1-1 draw with Premier League table-toppers Chelsea. And finally, in what was his final act as United’s caretaker boss, the Englishman managed to earn a 3-2 win over Arsenal, before leaving the club shortly after the game:

“After a lot of thought and deliberation, I have decided that now is the right time for me to leave. I am, and will always be, a fan and will come to as many matches as possible. I would like to wish Ralf, the staff, the players and the fans all the best for the future.”

Michael Carrick to Preston?

Though a small CV, Carrick’s solid little run for Manchester United, which included a draw with the European Champions, will likely stand him in good stead should he wish to pursue a career in management.

And, it appears as though, if he wishes, Carrick could be presented with an opportunity for a swift return to management.

As per the Daily Star citing the Sun, Carrick is one of the top candidates to land the currently vacant Preston role.
