Agent of Manchester United star confirms player wishes to depart club in January

The agent of Anthony Martial has confirmed his client wishes to leave the club in January.

Anthony Martial’s Manchester United stint

Anthony Martial has endured a difficult couple of seasons at Manchester United.

Signed from AS Monaco back in 2015, the now 26-year-old has failed to live up to the hype that surrounded him when he was first brought to Old Trafford.

Martial started out his United career largely being used as a left-winger. However, more recent years have seen him deployed as a centre-forward.

But, unfortunately for Martial, it has become fairly clear that the Frenchman is not cut out to be the main no.9 at a top club.

2020/21, for example, saw Martial used as Man United’s main striker for a good chunk of the campaign as Edinson Cavani had injury issues.

However, though he featured in 22 of the Red Devils’ 38 league ties before getting injured, he would only score four goals.

Martial eyeing Manchester United exit

This season, meanwhile, has seen the Frenchman fare no better. Martial has, so far, notched 10 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions.

However, Martial has scored just once, provided no assists and has largely been used as a sub.

The forward is yet to feature under new boss Ralf Rangnick as he is out with a knee issue. But even if he was fit, it is hard to see Martial getting too many minutes ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani.

So, it is not too surprising to see his agent confirm recently that Martial wishes to leave the club in January:

“Anthony wishes to leave the club in January.

“He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.”

With Martial still having a good four-five years left at the top level, there is still a chance he can salvage what was once a very promising career. Where the forward will end up, though, remains to be seen. But you can be sure a link to newly-minted Newcastle United will pop up very soon.
