Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard reveals the new COVID related issue that will affect their summer business

Aston Villa hit by COVID cases

Aston Villa have become the latest club to be hit by COVID-19 cases, as Manchester United and Tottenham have both had games postponed over the last seven days.

In his pre-match press conference, Gerrard noted that the club have “a couple of (positive) cases on the playing side and a couple of cases on the staff side”.

However, their game against Norwich this evening is still expected to go ahead.

The vaccination status of players could well have an effect on the club going forwards, however.

Steven Gerrard hints at the future importance of Vaccination status

Speaking on potential future transfer business, Gerrard revealed that COVID-19, and the vaccination status of players, could well form part of the decision of who to target, if only because it effects the chances of being available more often.

Gerrard revealed:

“I’ve been really impressed with (sporting director) Johan Lange and the guys around him in recruitment and scouting in terms of the details and work I’ve seen so far. We look at everything. So I’m sure it will come up.

“But we’ll obviously make decisions as and when we decide a certain person is the one who could come in and make us better. We’ll go across it with a fine-toothed comb.

“But I don’t think it’s right for me to comment on if I would or wouldn’t in that situation. But it would certainly come into conversations in the background.”

Will more clubs follow in Aston Villa’s suit, and look to recruit players that have been vaccinated while avoiding those that are unvaccinated?
