Liverpool vs Manchester City: Pep Guardiola surpasses Jurgen Klopp record

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Pep Guardiola surpasses Jurgen Klopp record via Phil Foden goal

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have surpassed a Premier League record previously held by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Manchester City vs Leeds

Tuesday’s late Premier League kick-off saw Manchester City play host to Leeds United.

Leeds had a very impressive record against Man City last term, taking four points off Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, the Peacocks have been nowhere near the level they were at for much of 2020/21, leaving a Man City win on Tuesday – even without the Sky Blues having a recognised senior right-back in the team – seeming very, very likely.

Pep Guardiola breaks Jurgen Klopp record

Things got off to a great start for City. Bernardo Silva missed a sitter around six minutes in, but a Stuart Dallas failed clearance allowed Phil Foden to hand City the lead just a few minutes later.

Man City then doubled their lead after 12 minutes when Jack Grealish headed in a Riyad Mahrez cross.

City’s first strike of the day would be their 500th in the Premier League since Pep Guardiola took charge:

And, as revealed by Opta, City netted 500 goals under the Spaniard in just 207 games, the fastest of any manager in the competition’s history.

They add that the previous record was held by Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool who reached 500 in 234 games – a stat which is no doubt set to stoke the already fierce rivalry between Liverpool and City, who have dominated the English game over the last several years.
