Atletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez makes Manchester United claim ahead of Champions League clash

After being drawn against them in the Champions League, Luis Suarez has recently made a claim about Manchester United.

Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid

The 2021/22 Champions League last-16 draw took place earlier this week.

Manchester United were originally put up against Lionel Messi’s PSG which would have led to a showdown between the Argentine and Cristiano Ronaldo for perhaps the final time in their storied careers.

However, the draw had to be redone and Ralf Rangnick’s side are instead facing off with Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United will first face the Spanish powerhouse at the Wanda Metropolitano on the 23rd of February.

The Red Devils then host Diego Simeone’s side at Old Trafford in the second leg on the 15th of March.

Luis Suarez on Manchester United

Atletico and Manchester United have faced off just twice before in competitive ties.

Both came in 1991 as part of the European Cup Winners Cup. Manchester United lost the first tie 3-0 then drew the reverse fixture 1-1 – scorelines they will be keen to avoid this time around.

Ahead of facing Man United, Atletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez spoke briefly about them in a recent interview.

When doing so, Suarez claimed that Manchester United are one of the best:

“I saw the second [draw]. To win the Champions League, you have to beat the best. United are one of the best. We will go into the knockout stage in the best way possible.”
