Lacazette leads Arsenal against West Ham

Veteran forward Alexandre Lacazette has been trusted by manager Mikel Arteta to be his representative on the pitch tonight against David Moyes’ high-flying West Ham at the Emirates in the wake of star striker

The senior figure in the Arsenal leadership group under Arteta, Lacazette now – for the time being – moves into his new role as the prime choice for the armband, though it remains unclear if it may change from match to match given other options such as Granit Xhaka, Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, and Kieran Tierney being mooted as potential replacements for Aubameyang.

Arteta named an unchanged XI that ran out 3-0 winners against Southampton at the weekend, and questions continue to mount regarding the future of the Gabonese international star as it was confirmed that he would not be considered for selection tonight, nor would he feature among the matchday squad.

Social media reaction

Like most talking points involving Arsenal these days, the response on Twitter is as divided as ever.

Some still persist in thinking that club boss Mikel Arteta has handled the situation involving Aubameyang poorly, while still others have sided with the manager over repeat behavior by the club’s senior figure amongst the playing personnel.

As for Lacazette, a player who continues to be linked with leaving the club in the summer when his deal at the Emirates runs down, some prefer one of the younger core to be nominated as soon as possible as the new captain rather than rely on veteran leadership in the interim.
