Chelsea ravaged by latest outbreak as identities of four Covid cases confirmed before Everton clash

Four positive cases in Chelsea camp; fifth awaiting results

Chelsea is the latest Premier League club to feel the hurt from the recent Covid-19 outbreak sweeping through the top flight of English football after the Blues confirmed at least four first-team players to have tested positive.

Star assets Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, and Callum Hudson-Odoi are all confirmed to have tested positive amid the recent outbreak in the Chelsea camp caused by the new Omicron variant of the virus according to The Athletic’s Simon Johnson.

German international starlet Kai Havertz is also at risk of being confirmed as a positive case as he sits out tonight while he awaits his test results.

The Blues are meant to host Everton at Stamford Bridge this evening but have fielded a heavily-reduced matchday XI that features no recognized center-forward as well as a bench that contains multiple out of favor options the likes of Ross Barkley, Saúl Ñiguez, and two keepers in Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli

Premier League hit hard by the latest outbreak

With the news that five Premier League fixtures have been canceled this weekend amid the latest surge of Covid-19, calls for a league-wide postponement at the weekend continue to grow.

Manchester United-Brighton, Southampton-Brentford, Watford-Crystal Palace, West Ham-Norwich, and Everton-Leicester City have all been called off after a flood of new cases swept across the league.

This comes in the wake of further cancelations during the midweek program when three fixtures between Tuesday and Thursday were postponed.

Though many will advocate for a circuit-breaker pause to be utilized to hopefully stem the tide of the rising number of cases among the twenty Premier League clubs, more measures are surely required. Athlete bubbles may once again have to be established, as well as a return to daily testing.

Unfortunately, it seems as though the Premier League may once again have to take drastic measures if it hopes to avoid a long-term delay in the 2021-22 season programme.
