Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski has, on Friday evening, joined Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo in football’s record books.

Lewy on target once more

Polish international Lewandowski marked his return to action a short time ago.

After notching a brace in midweek at Stuttgart, the prolific hitman led the line from the off once again this evening, as Bayern played host to Wolfsburg in a Bundesliga clash.

The German champions, almost inevitably, made short work of Florian Kohfeldt’s men, ultimately emerging on the right side of a 4-0 scoreline.

After all of Thomas Muller, Dayot Upamecano and Leroy Sane found the net, and with the matchup entering its closing stages, it appeared that, in what would have proven a rarity, the aforementioned Lewandowski was set to see out the night without adding his name to the scoresheet.

Where there’s a will, though, there’s a way… and few have more sheer willingness to find the net than Bayern’s main man.

In turn, with just minutes remaining at the Allianz Arena, Lewy popped up with his 19th goal of the Bundesliga campaign (yes, NINETEEN), to add further gloss to an already one-sided scoreline.

CR7 matched

Lewandowski’s latest strike, though, in fact proved significant in far more than simply adding further to an already eye-watering season tally.

As confirmed in the game’s aftermath, the Pole has now notched 43 Bundesliga goals this calendar year, breaking a half-century-old record previously held by German icon Gerd Muller:

Not only that, but Lewy has also joined one of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of boots in the record books.

His goal against Wolfsburg, incredibly, marked the 33-year-old’s 69th of 2021 across all competitions, enough to equal the most prolific calendar year of one Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary career.

Lionel Messi’s all-time benchmark of 91, however, remains firmly intact…
