Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has, on Saturday evening, provided an insight into the extent of the Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

Martinelli on target

The Gunners, of course, are currently locked in action.

In one of just four Premier League fixtures given the green light this weekend, Arteta and co. made the trip to Elland Road, to take on Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United.

Arsenal no doubt headed into proceedings brimming with confidence, on the back of a pair of impressive victories over Southampton and West Ham over the course of the last week.

Leeds, on the other hand, fell to a harrowing 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City last time out, with the woes of this evening’s hosts added to further by an alarming absentee list.

In turn, it shouldn’t come as all that much of a surprise to hear that, with half an hour on the clock on Saturday, Arsenal lead by a goal to nil.

After Alexandre Lacazette robbed Adam Forshaw of possession in a dangerous area on the quarter of an hour mark, the ball fell kindly to the in-form Gabriel Martinelli, who made no mistake with a driven finish into the roof of the net:

*Update* – Martinelli has since made it 2-0 to Arsenal.

Ahead of kick-off at Elland Road, confirmation was forthcoming that a member of Mikel Arteta’s squad – in the form of Sambi Lokonga – had tested positive for Covid-19:

In turn, speaking to the media pre-match, Arsenal’s boss was inevitably drawn on the scale of the outbreak at the club.

And Arteta, after confirming that the Gunners’ training base has been closed, went on to reveal that a number of staff members, as well as ‘a few players’ have joined Lokonga in returning positive tests:
