A fresh insight into the potential ramifications of the ongoing Covid-19 situation in the Premier League has been provided on Sunday evening.

PL ravaged

To say that English football authorities have been placed on red alert across the week to date would of course be something of an understatement.

As the campaign enters the usually hectic festive fixture list, the powers-that-be governing the Premier League landscape have been left with little choice but to postpone a rake of fixtures.

This comes as a whole host of top-flight clubs are forced to deal with the fallout from a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Watford, Leicester City and Brentford have all seen their plans thrown into disarray, amid enforced periods of self isolation on the part of playing and backroom staff alike.

The situation ultimately culminated in just four of the ten scheduled Premier League fixtures being played out over the course of this weekend, resulting in table-topping Manchester City extending their advantage over the chasing pack.

Shutdown imminent?

And, if the latest word stemming from the media late on Sunday is anything to go by, then it appears that an even more extensive postponement process could yet be on the cards.

This comes amid confirmation that all 20 Premier League clubs intend to meet this coming Monday, to discuss the possibility of cancelling an entire gameweek over the festive period.

Gameweek 20, as things stand, looks the most likely candidate, a move which would see planned fixtures called off on all of the 28th, 29th and 30th of December.
