Gary Neville makes big claim about Liverpool duo

Gary Neville makes big claim about Liverpool duo

Liverpool held by Tottenham

Sunday’s late Premier League kick-off saw Tottenham and Liverpool play out an enthralling clash in north London.

Harry Kane would fire Spurs into the lead after just 13 minutes.

Diogo Jota then put Liverpool back on level terms after 35 minutes, before Andy Robertson made it 2-1 69 minutes in.

Liverpool could not maintain their lead, though, and would see Heung-min Son snatch a point for Tottenham following an Alisson error.

Neville’s Robertson & Alexander-Arnold claim

On the day, it was Liverpool’s full-backs , Trent Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, who stole the show.

Robertson assisted Jota’s goal and scored himself, whilst TAA set up Robertson and was a menace throughout the 90 minutes.

Following the game, which did see Robertson somewhat harshly sent off, Manchester United legend Gary Neville has made a big claim about the Reds’ two full-backs.

Neville stated that he does not think he has seen two full-backs play in the Premier League that are as good as Robertson and Alexander-Arnold are as a pair:

“Sometimes, during a game, you have to check yourself when you’re involved in an emotional game like this as a co-commentator or commentator, you’re mentioning them in the same breath as probably the two greatest full-backs I’ve ever seen, Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

“For so many years they were the shining example. They transformed full-back play. I know there had been attacking full-backs before, the Liverpool teams of the 70s, but when you think of them as being an attacker first, defender second, contributing to free-kicks, attacks, crosses, every part of the game. They made full-backs a prominent part of the team.

“They were exceptional, but these two… I don’t think I’ve seen two full-backs play in the Premier League that are as good as these two as a pair. The way in which they combine on the pitch, the way they play the game, they’re an absolute joy.”

Given how impressive and consistent the pair have been over the last several years, Neville may have a point.
