William Saliba nomination proves Arsenal made right call

William Saliba nomination proves Arsenal made right call

Arsenal’s William Saliba has been recognised for his fine form with Marseille via a Team of the Year nomination.

Saliba & Arsenal

Arsenal of course secured Saliba’s services in the summer of 2019.

The Gunners are believed to have forked over around £27m for the centre-back.

Despite the hefty fee, however, Arsenal are yet to hand Saliba a senior appearance.

Instead, the centre-back has now been loaned out to three separate clubs, the latest of which came in the form of Marseille.

Given the large chunk of change Arsenal paid for Saliba’s services, and the fact that he was signed over two years ago, Arsenal not playing Saliba once in the first-team to date has looked a bit of an odd decision.

Arsenal made right Saliba call

However, with Arsenal not having any European football this term, there has been much less need for rotation in the first-team.

This has led to new signing Ben White and Gabriel becoming nailed-on as Arsenal’s centre-back duo for most matches.

Given Saliba’s age and lack of playing time before his loan, an Arsenal stay likely would have seen him on the fringes of the squad and not developing an awful lot.

With Marseille, though, Saliba has been a regular starter and has now, as mentioned above, been recognised for his fine form.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Saliba has been named in the Football Observatory’s Ligue 1 Team of the Year alongside such players as Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi:

Said nomination shows that Arsenal made the right call on loaning Saliba out as he has been able to gain some much-needed first-team experience and will now no doubt return to London in the summer, ready to compete for a regular starting berth, something he would likely not have been doing this term.
