Revealed: The weird Guinness World Record that Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino once held

Minamino: From Hero to Zero

In a rollercoaster five minutes for Liverpool’s Takummi Minamino, the Japanese midfielder went from hero to almost zero as Liverpool came from two goals down to snatch a draw, and then prevail on penalties, over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup quarter final.

It was Minamino’s last-second strike that levelled the tie, which Leicester had been in control of for much of the 90 minutes thanks to a pair of goals from Jamie Vardy in the opening quarter of an hour.

However, he was forced to watch on anxiously as he missed his penalty in the subsequent shoot-out before his goalkeeper bailed him out and sent the Reds through to the semi-finals, where they will face Arsenal.

Minamino’s odd World Record

And, ahead of the game, an altogether odd record was revealed.

Bizarrely, Minamino took to the programme notes to explain how he once held the world record for the most high-fives in one minute. He reveals:

“Yes, I held the record for the most high-fives in a minute, but I think it has been broken,”

“It happened when I played for Cerezo Osaka and it was an event organised by the club for people living in the area, in the town. About 200 people queued up in a line in a shopping centre and as I was the youngest player in the team I was chosen to join them.”

“I had to run down the line and high-five them and I managed to make the Guinness World Records.

“It is a very good memory and we still talk about it. Maybe it would be good fun if I celebrated a goal for Liverpool like this!”

What’s the most unusual record you have seen?
