Aaron Ramsdale stat highlights key issue Arsenal must fix

Aaron Ramsdale impressing with Arsenal

Arsenal would bring in Aaron Ramsdale from now-Championship outfit Sheffield United over the summer.

The Englishman had previously not enjoyed the best of spells in the Premier League, with either Sheffield United or Bournemouth.

However, Ramsdale is still just 23 years of age, and full of potential. When the shot-stopper joined Arsenal, there was an expectation that he would play back-up to Bernd Leno.

And, for the first three league games of the season, this is what happened, with the German starting in the 2-0 loss to Brentford, 2-0 loss to Chelsea and 5-0 loss to Manchester City (Ramsdale had not yet signed for Arsenal at the time of the Brentford game).

But, following the Gunners’ awful start to the campaign, Mikel Arteta has since dropped Leno, and handed Ramsdale a chance to shine.

And, so far, the young shot-stopper has done exactly that. Ramsdale has kept an impressive eight clean sheets in 15 outings for Arsenal to date, with a number of Man of the Match displays sprinkled across those ties.

Arsenal’s worrying stat

Whilst there is no doubting that Ramsdale has exceeded expectations and is one a fine run of form for the Gunners, a worrying stat involving the keeper has come to light.

As reported by the Mirror, Ramsdale had made 53 saves so far this season, being called into action after just 25 and a half minutes each time on average.

This means that Ramsdale is the second busiest goalkeeper in terms of minutes per save, with only Leeds’ Illan Meslier being busier.

Granted, Ramsdale is making a lot more saves than the Frenchman, but the fact he is conceding so many shots in comparison to the rest of the league suggests that Arsenal as a team let the opposition shoot too often and, if not for Ramsdale, their defence could be looking much worse than it is right now.

And, if Arsenal truly wish to become a top-four side again, you would assume they would have to start limiting the number of shots they concede.
