Newcastle tracking former Manchester United striker for January move

Newcastle tracking Odion Ighalo

Cash-laden Newcastle head into January without any clear direction when it comes to transfer business in a bid to add quality to the squad at St.

James’ Park but could be set to make a move for former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo in a bid to arrest their struggles.

Currently plying his trade for Saudi Arabian outfit Al Shabab Riyadh after a stint in the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Shenhua, the Nigerian international is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League according to SkySports.

Though Ighalo did not have a brilliant stint at Old Trafford, he certainly endeared himself to Hornets fans during his three year spell at Vicarage Road, bagging 40-goals across 100-appearances in all competitions.

Despite Newcastle having a cadre of forwards under Eddie Howe through Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle, and star winger Allan Saint-Maximin who has at times deputized through the middle of the forward line, additonal depth in the position is being targeted.

The realities of a Premier League relegation battle

Regardless of the massive financial backing that Newcastle are sure to receive in the wake of the club being purchased by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, vast sums of wealth is not enough for the Magpies to moonlight as the pide piper when it comes to the acquisition of reinforcements via the transfer market.

Eddie Howe’s outfit have been linked with a wealth of players both in England and on the continent since the takeover, including recent links with LOSC Lille’s Dutch international standout Sven Botman.

Other names like Joe Rodon, Marcelo Brozović, Moussa Dembele, Lucas Paqueta, Dušan Vlahović, Aaron Ramsey, and Kieran Trippier have all been mooted.

But given the club’s struggles in the Premier League this season, it is clear that a massive wage packet on offer is not enough for Newcastle to prize top players away from their current charges and straight into a relegation dogfight that looks set to last the entirety of the 2021-22 campaign.
