Newcastle consider move for Samuel Umtiti

Newcastle United continues to be linked with a wealth of names as the January window approaches and they could be set to add defensive reinforcements into the ranks at St James’ Park after French international center-back Samuel Umtiti becomes the latest player to pop up on the radar screens on Tyneside.

As reported by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Newcastle is considering tabling a €20million bid for Umtiti to add some semblance of quality into the backline under new boss Eddie Howe.

Umtiti has long been viewed as out-of-favor at the Camp Nou even before Xavi returned to the club to replace Ronald Koeman, and the Catalan giants are adamant in their attempts to get the former Olympique Lyonnais standout off the books as they look to continue to navigate the market in their own right after securing Manchester City’s Spanish international starlet Ferran Torres.

Given the current situation at Newcastle and their need to add quality into the ranks as quickly as possible, Umtiti provides a prime target for Howe to secure despite his woeful injury record in Spain.

Magpies linked with another out-of-favor star

Samuel Umtiti is not the only big-name player that is currently out-of-favor at club level that the St. James’ Park outfit is linked with after Newcastle has been rumored to be monitoring former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Newcastle is said to be one of four clubs that have a growing interest in the Gabonese star, with Barcelona, Juventus, and Olympique Lyonnais also keeping an eye on the 32-year-old veteran goal scorer.

Certainly, it can be postulated that the Magpies need more firepower (as well as creativity) in the team given their current goal total standing at just 19-goals across nineteen fixtures with just Callum Wilson (6) and Allan Saint-Maximin (4) the only Magpies with more than a single league goal to their name in 2021-22.

With Newcastle able to afford wage packets for the likes of Umtiti and Aubameyang, they may not be long-term solutions, but they could certainly offer an immediate boost in quality that could potentially get them out of the bottom three.
