Barcelona blow: Three players may need to be sold to register Ferran TorresBarcelona blow: Three players may need to be sold to register Ferran Torres

Barcelona sign Ferran Torres

The first major transfer of the winter window was announced on Tuesday.

FC Barcelona signed Spanish international Ferran Torres from Manchester City for a reported initial €55m, with another €10m in instalments:

Barcelona confirmed the news via their social media, with it reported elsewhere that La Blaugrana have inserted a €1b release clause into his deal.

Barcelona unable to register Torres

Given Torres’ versatility and proven eye for goal, which he has shown for Spain and Man City, his move to Barcelona looked to be a positive step for Xavi Hernandez and co.

However, the move has now once again shed more light on the poor management that has plagued the club for several years now.

As reported by El Chiringuito’s Dario Montero, Barcelona cannot register Torres because their wage bill is 85 per cent and needs to get down to 70 per cent in order to register players.

There are two solutions to this issue according to Montero.

Firstly, Barcelona could work on new deals for Sergio Roberto and Ousmane Dembele with lower wages.

Alternatively, they would need to sell three of Samuel Umtiti, Philippe Coutinho, Luke de Jong, Yusuf Demir or Sergino Dest:

Barcelona faced a similar issue with wage structure over the summer and it was the reason Lionel Messi could not sign a new deal. Good to see they have learned from their mistakes.
