Word stemming from the English media late on Saturday night has pointed towards an audacious Newcastle United swoop for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Auba out in the cold

The name of Gabonese hitman Aubameyang has of course taken its place centre stage in the headlines over the last couple of weeks.

This comes owing to a chain of events which ultimately culminated in the Gabonese being stripped of the captain’s armband at the Emirates.

Aubameyang is understood to have returned late from a trip abroad in December, an infraction which, initially, saw the ex-Borussia Dortmund man dropped for a Premier League meeting with Southampton.

Add to this the fact that the 32-year-old has struggled for form, as well as having his commitment to the Arsenal cause called into question this season, though, and manager Arteta coming to the eventual decision to seek out a new leader for his panel of young stars became all the more understandable.

‘Auba’, in turn, has since been omitted from the Gunners’ ensuing five matchday squads, with the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Alexandre Lacazette shining in his absence.

St. James’ bound?

In turn, it should perhaps not come as all that much of a surprise to hear of rival Premier League clubs beginning to sniff around Aubameyang’s signature.

And, as alluded to above, on Saturday night, the identity of one such club has been revealed.

As per a report from The Mirror, Newcastle United are expressing a keen interest in luring Arsenal’s out-of-favour striker to Tyneside this month.

The newly-minted Magpies are understood to have gone as far as to make contact with their counterparts at the Emirates, over the possibility of taking Aubameyang on loan for the remainder of the season.

From here, the hope for both clubs would be that the deal would be made permanent, albeit with Newcastle keen on an option to buy, rather than an obligation.

Any such transfer would be expected to set those in a position of power at St. James’ Park back a fee of around £20 million.
