Rio Ferdinand slams Arsenal’s Gabriel/makes Virgil van Dijk comparison

Rio Ferdinand has hit out at Gabriel for his actions during Arsenal’s loss to Manchester City.

Arsenal 1-Manchester City 2

Arsenal played host to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Despite an upturn in form on the part of the Gunners, Arsenal getting anything against Man City did seem very unlikely.

And, though they did eventually lose the tie 2-1, the north Londoners did put on a valiant display and were unlucky to come away with nothing.

Gabriel criticised

The main reason Arsenal came away with nothing was due to some silly individual errors.

Firstly, Granit Xhaka pulled down Bernardo Silva in the box to hand City a penalty, which they scored.

Then, just a few minutes later, Gabriel was shown a second yellow card after blocking Gabriel Jesus.

The challenge was an unnecessary one in the middle of the pitch, and has now seen Gabriel slammed by Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand:

“You get a yellow card and you automatically think you have to adjust the way you approach situations now. He’s got red mist, he’s still thinking about the penalty, that’s the problem, he’s thinking about the penalty that happened previously, he doesn’t see the referee is only ten yards away and I’m half a pitch away from danger, there’s no danger.

“If you’re going to be the top player here, and he’s got to be the leading centre-half at the moment, you’ve got to curve that and take the emotions out of situations.”

Whilst hitting out at Gabriel, Ferdinand opted to draw comparisons with Virgil van Dijk and Ruben Dias, stating that said pair would never do something like what Gabriel did:

“When you’re in the heat of a battle you won’t see a Dias doing that, you won’t see a Virgil van Dijk doing that. They calm others around them, that’s what leaders do.

“You can be amped and get uptight but when the game starts – laser focus back on the job. He is the total opposite of that. Maybe it’s inexperience but that’s something I feel the people behind the scenes at Arsenal really need to get a hold of because you can’t continue to keep losing people.

“I don’t like emotional defenders. Emotional defenders drop you points over a season because they see red mist and you lose them and go off the pitch early.

“Trust me, the fans might have clapped him off but the other ten players on the pitch won’t be thanking him, they’ll be gutted with that and there will be eyes on him.”
