Liverpool drawn against Arsenal in Carabao Cup Semi final

After staging a remarkable comeback from 3-1 down to edge past Leicester City on penalties, Liverpool were handed Arsenal in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

A last-gasp equaliser from Takumi Minamino took the tie to penalties, where Jurgen Klopp’s side held their nerve, and Caoimhin Kelleher held his, to prevail.

This means that, despite giving ground to Manchester City in what is increasingly looking like a one-horse race for the Premier League title, Liverpool still have three avenues open to them should they wish to bring silverware back to Anfield this season.

However, there are fears that their Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal may not go ahead.

Can Liverpool field a team?

Earlier today, the Daily Mail revealed that there were fears among the Liverpool camp that the first leg of the contest, scheduled for this Thursday (6th January), may not be able to go ahead.

This comes amid fears of a Covid-19 outbreak among the Liverpool squad, with Jurgen Klopp and three of his players, Alisson, Fabinho and Curtis Jones, all missing the Chelsea clash after testing positive for the virus.

As per the report:

The EFL, who run the Carabao Cup, say games can be postponed if teams cannot submit a team of 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper.

And with Alisson out, Liverpool are down to just two senior goalkeepers, although they could also promote an U23 shot-stopper if necessary.

Meanwhile, they are also likely to be missing Thiago, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Naby Keita through injury and international duty.

That being said, they should have more than enough players to fulfil the requirement unless something drastically changes.

In the hours since, Liverpool have cancelled their training session for Tuesday afternoon.
