Player unrest during Gabonese AFCON preparations

Gabon could not have wished for a worst start as AFCON 2021 is set to kick-off on 9 January when hosts Cameroon clash with Burkina Faso at the Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé.

Les Panthères begin their Group B program against Comoros at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo but head coach Patrice Neveu could be without a number of key players, including Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as a potential player strike is brewing inside the Gabonese camp.

According to Ghanaian outlet 3SportsGH, Gabon has refused to board their plane that was scheduled to depart Dubai today after the players have lodged their grievances at not receiving their bonuses yet; which they demand they must receive before partaking in hostilities in Group B.

Via Gabon Media Time, further details mention an ongoing dispute about unpaid salaries rather than just bonuses, with GFF officials stating that they will rely on home-based players to replace those who are based abroad – like Aubameyang – if their refusal to travel stands.

Newcastle remain interested in Aubameyang

Despite the brewing issues while on national team duty, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains the subject of transfer interest from Premier League outfit Newcastle as the Magpies look to bring their massive financial backing to bear in the January window.

Eddie Howe’s outfit has already completed a deal for veteran England right-back Kieran Trippier and will now look to continue to add to the first-team set up at St. James’ Park in a bid to stave off relegation.

Newcastle is now said to be turning to Aubameyang, as well as fellow Arsenal colleagues Eddie Nketiah, Mohamed Elneny, and Rob Holding in what would amount to an ambitious four-man raid on the Emirates.
