Cavani plan B for Barcelona

Spanish giants Barcelona could turn to Manchester United star striker Edinson Cavani during the January window as they continue to source solutions for their striker shortage at the Camp Nou.

As reported by Football España citing MARCA, Cavani is being labeled as the plan B option for Blaugrana boss Xavi as their efforts to sign Juventus front-man Álvaro Morata are coming up short.

Barcelona has found it difficult to clear the decks of a cadre of names the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Samuel Umtiti in order to free up enough of the wage bill to afford a deal for the Spanish international forward in the wake of their completed move for starlet Ferran Torres.

But the veteran Uruguayan international could certainly be a credible option for the short term after the latest reports in Italy – as mentioned by Fabrizio Romano – state that La Vecchia Signora headmaster Massimiliano Allegri prefers to keep Morata in Turin, closing off access to the former Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, and Real Madrid man.

Rangnick ‘desperately wants’ to keep hold of United striker

Despite the interest from Barcelona and his limited minutes at Manchester United irrespective of his overall stature in the game, Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick is adamant about keeping hold of Edinson Cavani at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season.

In the run-up to the 1-0 loss to Wolves, Rangnick spoke plainly regarding his desire to keep Cavani in Manchester along with the profile he brings to the table at the Theatre of Dreams;

“We have had quite a few conversations over the last couple of weeks… I told him from the very first day he is a highly important player, he is probably the only one who can play as a striker back to goal and face to goal.

His professionalism and his work ethic is just amazing. I told him that I desperately want him to stay and stay until the end of the season, and he knows that.”

Rangnick may have grounds to fight to keep the Uruguayan as well, who missed most of the current season through injury. Once fit and available, the German tactician has called upon the former Paris Saint-Germain, SSC Napoli, and Palermo frontman in each of the last three Premier League fixtures United have logged, which have included starts in the last two.

Should Rangnick get his way, Edinson Cavani could yet have a massive role to play as the Red Devils look to climb up the table and into the top four.
