The latest on Philippe Coutinho’s proposed Aston Villa move

Aston Villa struggling under Gerrard

The summer transfer window was supposed to signal a step up for Aston Villa, with the club reinvesting the 100 million pounds they received for Jack Grealish in several players in order to spread the quality across their side.

However, it has not panned out that way. The Villians have struggled this campaign thus far, and were forced to part ways with former boss Dean Smith after a run of five successive defeats.

In came new boss Steven Gerrard, having experienced success with Rangers, and while things picked up in the immediate games after, they have reverted to type in recent games.

A defeat against Brentford, their 11th already after just 19 games, leaves them in a lowly 13th place in the Premier League table at half distance, and the club desperately needing reinforcements.

Coutinho on the way?

Now, as per reports in Spain, they may just have found one in the form of Barcelona midfielder, and former teammate of Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian is free to depart the Camp Nou this January, with Barcelona needing to sell in order to register new signing Ferran Torres, and it is Aston Villa that are reportedly close to sealing a deal for him.

As per the generally reliable Matteo Moretto, the Brazilian midfielder is now very close to a return to the Premier League, with a deal being announced soon.

Will he be the man to help end the Villa struggles?
