Supporters of La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have taken to social media in numbers on Saturday evening, to take aim at one member of the club’s squad.
De Jong not enough
The Blaugrana marked their return to action a short time ago.
After firmly reestablishing themselves in the race for European football over the course of the last month, Xavi’s Hernandez’s troops made the trip to Los Carmenes, eyeing a 3rd-straight victory across all competitions at the expense of Granada.
Unfortunately, however, when all was said and done, Barca came up just short.
A hard-fought 90 minutes, across which either side could have added further to the scoreline, ultimately culminated in the visitors being forced to settle for a share of the spoils, in a 1-1 stalemate.
Luuk de Jong, for the 2nd time in the space of a week, looked set to guide Xavi and co. to all three points, after putting Barcelona ahead courtesy of a fine header just shy of the hour mark:

Granada, though, had other ideas.
Just as proceedings got set to roll into injury time at Los Carmenes, Antonio Puertas rattled home a fine equaliser, dealing a hefty blow to the Champions League qualification hopes of their opponents in the process.
Gavi and Xavi targeted
On the back of the full-time whistle bringing a close to another disappointing day’s work for their side on Saturday, it should therefore come as little surprise to hear of the Barcelona faithful seeking out a scapegoat.
A number of the Blaugrana’s stars failed to cover themselves in glory over the course of the 90 minutes, but one in particular, in the form of youngster Gavi, has since been singled out for the most widespread criticism.
This comes after the 17-year-old provided a timely reminder of his inexperience at the top level, in picking up a needless 2nd yellow card ten minutes from time:
As much as i dont want to put blame on a 17yr old, ihave to say all this because of gavi’s recklessness
— sry wha- (@srywhaa) January 8, 2022
I hate to say it but this is gavi his fault
— FDJ21🇳🇱🔥 (@JS21___) January 8, 2022
Gavi was indeed reckless tonight…his exit ruined everything
— L.E.S (@Leslley20) January 8, 2022
I blame Gavi
— Vedant (@vedant7282) January 8, 2022
Gavi needs to learn already I respect the hustle but you shouldn’t be slide tackling when you have a yellow card
— 🪄🇳🇱 (@FDJChief) January 8, 2022
Idc what anybody says this is Gavi’s fault
— SB_10 (@Special_Beast10) January 8, 2022
Gavi’s fault otherwise concrete 3 points but we move. supercopa next.

Gavi is just too reckless. Its possible that he Sergio Ramos on youtube before every game. He needs to watch iniesta & xavi highlights instead of sergio ramos.
— Shah Nifaz Edits (@shahnifaz_edits) January 8, 2022
Gavi really let the team down today but you won’t hear a word cos he’s everyone’s favourite
— Odin (@OdinReborn_) January 8, 2022
Whilst so many have opted to point the finger of blame squarely at Gavi for Barca’s latest pair of dropped points, though, others have taken issue with the management of Xavi.
This comes owing to the Blaugrana icon’s decision not to hook his fledgling midfield talent from proceedings earlier, as Gavi walked the disciplinary tightrope whilst booked:
xavi’s fault for letting gavi staying on the pitch w a yellow card on his back

Let’s blame the coach when it’s his fault. Those subs killed the game today. The red was coming for Gavi and Xavi should have known that.
— Marino(Local-lyf) (@marinosings) January 8, 2022
This loss is on Xavi. Should have subbed off Gavi b4 the red card. He subbed off Dembele and De Jong at the time they (especially Dembele) would have been useful with counters.
— Abdul-Karim Mohammed (@Bewiesnab) January 8, 2022
Xavi is to be blamed for this draw really.
Gavi is on a yellow. Gavi is a rough player. Take him the fuck out earlier..
— Dear Prechy (@DearPrechy) January 8, 2022
Xavi should take the blame. Painful part is I can’t see any incredible tactics from him.
— PAUL (@IAmPaulKingsley) January 8, 2022
Xavi’s fault for this draw, Should’ve subbed Gavi off a long time ago and what impact did Depay bring on ??
— Philip (@totalnjr) January 8, 2022
Well …Gavi’s red card is ultimately Xavi’s fault.. considering Gavi’s temperament he let him stay on the pitch way too long..A Manager should protect his players especially the very young ones.. His red card is a long time coming https://t.co/lvERFSUab5

Xavi got his substitutions wrong, LDJ and Dembele were the only dangerous players upfront. They should have played till the end. Gavi should have been substituted around the 70th minute because of his yellow card. Xavi messed up! 😤😡
