Eddie Howe outlines transfer desire

Eddie Howe continues to scratch his head in how to kickstart the dated diesel engine that is Newcastle United after the Magpies crashed to a shock 1-0 defeat at St.

James’ Park against League One outfit Cambridge United.

Despite fielding a strong matchday XI that featured new January signing Kieran Trippier, it was not enough for the struggling Premier League outfit that has registered just a single win under the Amersham-native since he took over from Steve Bruce on 8 November.

In the wake of their unexpected ousting in the third round of the FA Cup, Howe spoke out regarding his hope that the club will persist in their attempts to add further quality into the first-team setup along Tyneside before the window slams shut in a matter of weeks;

“We would love to. I think you can see what Kieran did to the team. The response to him was first class. New signings at this moment would breathe new confidence into the team. So, fingers crossed.” Note: quote via BBC Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck

Newcastle continues to search for solutions in the market as growing concerns that the club may once again struggle to avoid relegation gather pace. Links with interest in Sevilla center-back Diego Carlos, and LOSC Lille’s Dutch starlet Sven Botman persist, while David Ornstein has confirmed that the club is in the market for both a striker as well as a central midfielder.

Newcastle stripped of Callum Wilson for a lengthy period

Links with a striker would hardly come as a shock for many in the Newcastle fanbase after star striker Callum Wilson suffered yet another injury in a career riddled with fitness concerns.

Howe confirmed that Wilson will be out for eight weeks after a second scan revealed the true severity of his latest setback.

Arsenal forward duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Eddie Nketiah have been previously mentioned as transfer options with Aubameyang ostracized from the first-team camp and Nketiah set for a free move away from north London at the end of the current campaign.

The Magpies were also said to be keeping tabs on SL Benfica’s Uruguayan hotshot Darwin Nunez as well as Zenit St.Petersburg’s Sardar Azmoun, but progression on either front has not been found.

With just about three weeks left in the winter window and realistic options hard to come by given their current Premier League status, Newcastle owners the Public Investment Fund may have to settle for something less than ideal temporarily if they are to at least provide Eddie Howe with depth in the number 9 role.
